Ban Circus Animals In Cyprus!
The arrival of the Barcelona Circus in Cyprus has enraged animal rights activists and the Cyprus Green Party, who are calling for a law banning circuses featuring animals. “Croatia, Austria and Spain are organising campaigns to ban circuses that use animals. The message is that animals are not clowns and they should not be subjected to mistreatment, abuse and hardship for the entertainment of some,” Kyriakos Kyriakou, President of ARC/KIVOTOS told the Cyprus Mail.
The ARC and the Greens are concerned both about the living conditions circus animals have to endure and the training methods used. “Video footage shows monstrosities taking place against animals during their training. Animals are beaten and tortured. I think that we are all aware that these things happen,” said Kyriakou.
ARC and the Greens also criticised the authorities for granting permission to the Barcelona Circus, currently performing at Linopetra in Limassol. Although the circus management initially told authorities that they would not be bringing animals with them, the ARC has received information that a shipment of lions and tigers will soon be arriving to perform. “We have discovered that we were deceived in this case. When the Environment Service asked the circus for a list of animals they would bring, they only listed dogs and horses.
“However, we have been informed that a second shipment is expected, with lions and tigers. Essentially what they do is they first visit a country without wild animals and then, if there is no reaction, they slip more animals into the act,” he said. According to Kyriakou, the Veterinary Services in co-operation with the Environment Service had in the past examined the proposal of banning circuses that use animals from coming to Cyprus. The ban is also being examined in other European countries, while some have already outlawed the practice.
“We want to see a law that bans the entry of circuses that use animals from entering and performing in Cyprus,” he said. A press conference is scheduled for today at the offices of the Green Party in Limassol at 11am.
